Michael in Belgium
Over the years, as in many countries, there have been two or more charts in Belgium - and the situation is complicated by different charts for different regions of the country. The two largest regions are the Dutch speaking north of the country, Flanders (population about 5.5 million), and the French speaking south, Wallonia (population about 3.5 million). The most complete chart action detailed here is from the Flanders region of Belgium.
In 1970, the two main singles charts were BRT and Humo, and in 1981 a third chart compiled by VTM-Joepie was launched. The chart action detailed here, for before 1996, is taken from a 'hybrid' chart made up from the BRT and Humo (and later VTM-Joepie) charts. A Top 30 singles chart was compiled until around 1990, when it was increased to a Top 40. Note: we are still looking for information from the Belgian albums chart for before 1996.
In January 1996, the official UltraPop charts began (Flanders & Wallonia), and from this date the chart action is from the UltraPop (Flanders & Wallonia) charts. Current charts: Top 50 Singles & Top 50 Albums.
