Michael in Canada
The first Canadian charts, modelled on the Billboard charts, were compiled by RPM magazine in 1968. The charts were based on sales and airplay, and by late 1969 Top 100 singles and albums charts were compiled weekly. Both charts were reduced to Top 50s in December 1980.
From 1981, we have used the sales-based singles and albums charts compiled by The Record magazine. Both The Record and RPM folded in 2000, following the introduction of the Nielsen SoundScan system for tracking sales and BDS system for monitoring airplay, in 1996 - today, the 'official' Hot 100 Canadian charts are compiled along similar lines to the Billboard charts.
Singles & Albums Sales Awards: Gold = 50,000, Platinum
= 100,000, Diamond = 1 million.
From May 2008: Gold = 40,000, Platinum = 80,000, Diamond = 800,000.
