The first 'pop-o-meter' singles chart was published in the New Zealand Listener in early 1966 - this was based on a weekly readers poll, so was unreliable. It was replaced in 1970 with a sales based chart. In May 1975, RIANZ (Recording Industry Association of New Zealand) began publishing a weekly Top 40 , which was extended to a Top 50 in May 1979. Both singles and albums charts were reduced from a Top 50 to a Top 40 in April 2004. The Top 10 Music DVDs chart started in 2004.

Over the Christmas/New Year period, some years no new chart was compiled for as many as four weeks. In such cases, singles and albums charting on the last published chart in December that also appeared on the first new chart of the following year, have been credited with an extra week for each week where no new chart appeared.

Singles Sales Awards: Gold = 10,000, Platinum = 20,000 from 1978-1992, Silver = 5,000 from 1987-1992. Gold & Platinum awards were reduced by half in 1992 due to declining sales (Silver awards ceased). Albums Sales Awards: Gold = 10,000 (7,500 from 1992), Platinum = 15,000.
